Return home and rest flat in bed for the remainder of the day.

Most individuals only experience mild discomfort that typically does not require pain medication. This discomfort may be felt in the groin or abdomen.

You may take acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), or naproxen (Aleve) for discomfort.
Day After

You may remove your tight undershorts or scrotal support and take a daily shower starting the morning after the procedure.

Use underwear that supports and holds the scrotum up for 1 week.

You may walk and drive as much as you like.

No sports, yard work, swimming, or heavy lifting over 30 pounds.

If your job is sedentary (office work or supervisor), you may return to work.
2 days after

You can resume more intense work and daily activities while wearing your scrotal support.

Once discomfort has subsided and tenderness is minimal, you can return to the gym or running. Otherwise, take Ibuprofen to help resolve any lingering discomfort.

On your first day back, reduce your usual workout by half: use half the weight, do half the reps, run at half the speed, and cover half the distance.

If you experience no pain, you can proceed with your regular workout the following day.

Once you are free from discomfort or tenderness, you may resume ejaculation. Typically, we recommend waiting at least 2 days before engaging in sexual activity.

The American Urological Association's Vasectomy Guidelines however advise men to wait a week, as ejaculating sooner may lead to prolonged discomfort.
Post-Vasectomy Semen Sample Instructions
At your appointment, you will be provided a take home kit to perform your sample at home 3 months and 20 ejaculations after your vasectomy. Follow the instructions in the kit carefully and mail the kit to the lab. You will receive an email with a secured link from the lab with your results. Until your semen shows NO SPERM you are still considered fertile and must continue birth control. If sperm are still seen, you will need to continue birth control and repeat the sample 4 weeks later.
